Maintenance of Complete Floodlighting Systems in the Education Sector

With responsibility for your school or college’s sports facilities, you depend on the smooth functioning of your assets to keep everyone happy and active on what are high capital value investments.

Sports Floodlighting Systems

To protect your investment over the long term, and to ensure the facilities are fully compliant with health and safety minded electrical and mechanical regulations and guidelines, ongoing maintenance is no longer an option.

Floodlight Maintenance

Key Maintenance Focus:

1. Electrical:
Your facility must prove that it is certified NICEIC compliant; this is mandatory on a 5 year basis, although NICEIC recommends a 3 yearly interval.

2. Lighting Levels:
Sports lighting levels are designed to achieve a maintained level of light below which it should not fall. This level can only be achieved by carrying out regular cleaning of the floodlight glass.

Lighting Guide 4: Sports Lighting published by The Society of Light & Lighting (part of CIBSE - Chartered Institution of Building and Service Engineers) indicates that between 10% and 17% of the light output of the floodlight is lost through dirt depreciation over a 3 year period without cleaning, dependent on the site location. Locations are categorised as low, medium and high pollution. These figures are based on IP65 protection floodlights. Lower rated floodlights (mostly older models and most US floodlights with IP54 protection) lose between 12% and 24% over the same period.

Your facility’s lighting levels could be boosted just by having the front glasses cleaned regularly!

3. Mechanical:
Sports lighting masts or poles, be they fixed or hinged, are designed in compliance with the ILE Technical Report No. 7 (Institution of Lighting Engineers). Similarly this design standard, recognised and accepted worldwide, stipulates a maintenance and inspection regime which ensures your masts or poles remain safe. This maintenance regime involves the inspection of foundation bolts, security of floodlight brackets, and a range of other checks.
