Southampton Sign QPR Striker Charlie Austin

In what could prove to be the biggest coup of the January transfer window, Southampton have signed QPR striker Charlie Austin for a reported price of £4 million.

Austin had just 6 months remaining on his QPR contract and the Championship side decided to cash in on the English striker this month.

In addition to his contract running out, another thing that prompted QPR to sell their prized asset is their position in the Championship.

17th in the 2nd tier of English football, QPR are 13 points adrift of the play-off places.

Thus, for Austin, who was itching for Premier League action, Southampton have offered him a way out.

Last season was Austin’s best in the Premier League as he scored 13 goals.

The fact that he was the 4th highest goalscorer in the EPL despite being in a relegated team tells everything about the abilities of the 26-year old.

Southampton weren’t the only club interested in him as the likes of Newcastle United and Crystal Palace were also interested in his acquisition.

However, it is the side from the south coast who moved first to seal his arrival.

Southampton were tempted to sign the English International due to their own woes in front of the goal.

With 8 defeats in last 11 games, the Saints currently sit 12th in the table.

Austin’s 10 goals in just 16 appearances already for QPR this season will boost The Saints hopes they can secure a finish in the top half of the Premier League.
